Scroll down to see what Year 6 have been getting up to as the year has gone on....

Our class novel for this first part of the year was Good Night Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian and we are currently reading The Nowhere Emporium by Ross Mackenzie. We are engrossed in reading it already! As we read each chapter we will:

Delve deeper into the vocabulary

Look for inferences within the text about the plot and characters discuss what Impact this has on the reader

Predict what we think will happen next

Explain what is happening

Retrieve information from text

Give a brief summary of what we have read so far.

Autumn Term

We have begun the term looking at biographies. We have had lots of fun looking at the biographies of famous sporting stars and celebrities. We analysed their features in order to write our own biographies of famous figures from the Victorian era and also of Charles Darwin from our Science topic of Evolution and Inheritance.

We then had so much fun exploring  a narrative poem called Albert and the Lion by Edgar Marriott. So far, we have acted out the story, text mapped the story to help us recite it. We have also compared various Edgar Marriott poems and also used our drama activities to help us write dialogue using action. We intend to use the events to write a newspaper article about it.

Spring Term

We have been looking at persuasive articles this term. We read lots of different articles and magpied all the persuasive vocabulary and features.

We then wrote our own persuasive articles about Cuerden Valley Park - where we went on our rivers fieldwork in the Autumn Term.
We have then used the story of Holi and other panchatantra stories based on Indian culture, to write out own. To aid our speaking and listening skills, we have worked in groups to create shadow puppets and performed the stories to parents
We have started a new poetry unit focusing on songs and lyrics. We started by looking at John Lennon's song Imagine and thought of our own Imagine ifs....
We then compared the lyrics of other songs and identified the themes and messages in them. It was a good way to demonstrate our use of cohesive devices in our writing too.
