Meet the Governors

Craig Corrin

Hello, my name is Craig Corrin.  I was privileged to be elected as a parent governor at St. Stephens in November 2019.

The most important part of my life is being a Dad. I live in Preston with my girlfriend Lara and our two sons. Our eldest started at St Stephens in 2019. Not knowing what to expect from this new adventure, I was delighted by the warmth of the welcome and support we received from everyone at St. Stephens.

Preston has always been my home. I was born in the city and have always lived in and around the centre.  There’s no where else in the world I would rather be on a summer's day than relaxing with my family in Avenham Park.

I have always harboured a love of learning. I was fortunate to be the first in my family to have the opportunity to attend university. A love of problem-solving and detective stories led me to complete a Law degree at New College, Oxford.

I have enjoyed a career in retail since 2010. For the past 5 years I have carried out Store Manager roles across Lancashire, Manchester and Cumbria. I love that every day is different and find looking after the welfare of my two hundred colleague store team a hugely rewarding role.

I applied for the role of parent governor as I believe that many of the skills I use daily in my work-life are similar to those that make a successful governor. Working with my fellow governors at St Stephens I am excited to be able to add value and drive improvement to the benefit of all the children of the school.

Julia Bell

My name is Julia Bell and I became a foundation governor in 2018. I retired after a 37 year career in education in 2013. I originally trained in Music but changed direction in 1990 to Special Educational Needs, working in various special schools where children with PMLD, SEBD, MLD, Deafblind and the deaf were taught.

I have experience in mainstream schools and  latterly as a Deputy Head for Inclusion, setting up a department for Inclusion in a brand new 11-18 school, which was subsequently recognised for its best practice for pupils with SEND.

I am passionate about children achieving their potential within a stimulating and exciting learning community, which fosters self-discipline and a thirst for knowledge. I believe that all children are entitled to an innovative curriculum that is inclusive, accessible and purposeful. I strongly value the dignity of all children irrespective of their level of difficulty.

I am also an active member of St. Stephen’s Church where I’m involved as a musician in the worship team; a member of the PCC; part of the Open the Book team; leader of a Home Group and a convenor of periodic All Age Worship events.

Rachel Clements

My name is Rachel Clements and I became a Community Governor in July 2018. I am also the, EAL and EYFS Governor. I work as a Local Authority School Adviser, having previously been a Primary School Headteacher in Lancashire. I decided to become a governor at St Stephen's as I was impressed by its inclusive and caring ethos and its commitment to every pupil and family. I am looking forward to working with other governors and with the staff to help to make St Stephen's the best it can be.

Lesley Edmondson

My name is Lesley Edmondson and I became a foundation governor in 2017.

I am a member of St. Stephens’s Church and am involved with helping at the Toddler Group there. I am now retired but worked for many years as a primary school teacher.

I believe that a good primary school can be key in giving children a confident start in their educational journey, and is also a place where children can grow in personal confidence and in their ability to get on with people from different backgrounds.

I have been impressed with the work of St. Stephen’s School in these areas, not least in the model it shows of people of different faiths and backgrounds working together, within the context of a church school.

I look forward to being part of a committed governing body that seeks to help the school be the best that it can for each child.

Rev. Dave Hanson

My name is Dave Hanson and I have been recently appointed to be the Vicar of St Stephen’s Church (October 2017). I am delighted to join the Governors at St Stephen’s School and to have the opportunity to build on the relationship already established between the school and church. I am married to Irene who has recently retired as an Early Years Teacher and we have three adult children, two of whom are primary school teachers and one who is training to be one. So guess what we talk about when everyone is home! Prior to entering ministry in the Church of England I worked as a Senior Manager in the NHS with particular responsibility for safeguarding. We have also spent 10 years working in South East Asia and so it is great to come to work in such a diverse community as the one here in Broadgate. I have a particular interest in the collective worship in school and the teaching of RE. I believe that St Stephen’s will continue to be a school that can offer children the highest standard of education and the opportunity to be part of a school community which lives out the principles of ‘faith in action’ expressed though equality and respect.

Mrs Kailash Parekh MBE, JP

I obtained a B.Ed (Hons) Degree with QTS from Edge Hill University, and a M.A. degree in Educational Studies in 2003 from Lancaster University.

I was transferred to the St Stephen’s Primary School Governing Body from the old Christ Church Infant school in September 1992 and have served as a school governor since then. My role as a school governor has been both interesting and rewarding. I enjoy working as a team and being able to participate in decision making and influencing policy and practice for the benefit of the children.

I am very passionate about promoting equality and diversity, particularly in the field of education. I was instrumental in organising the First Hindu Youth of the North through Hindu Youth U.K in 2002. My other voluntary work includes serving as the Vice Chair on the Racial Equality & Diversity Board and as a Community Governor at Penwortham Priory High. I was also appointed as a Magistrate in October 2001 and sit on the Family panel.

Through my work in the community, I have positively contributed in promoting better community cohesion and Race Relations. My work was recognised when I was awarded an MBE in 2004 by her majesty the Queen, for my services to Community Relations and Race Relations work in Preston. This was followed by the National GG2 Diversity & Leadership award for my work in the community and for making a positive contribution to the British society.

My other achievements include: “National Training Award” for my outstanding contribution to education and training both in 2003 & 2005; Woman of the Year award, 2007 and an Honorary Fellow of UCLan.

Aruna Patel

Following in the steps of his father, we have proudly entrusted our 3 year old son to begin his journey in Education at St Stephens Nursery. St Stephens School has been at the heart of the Broadgate Community for many years. It is a remarkable second home to our children, welcoming people from all faith backgrounds and cultures, whilst providing a firm foundation of British Christian Values and empowering our children with an excellent opportunity to educate and 'Aspire to Greatness.'

My name is Aruna Patel. I studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology at A level. My plan was to be a doctor, specifically a paediatrician as I have always wanted to work with children. However, as a vegetarian who gets very queasy at the sight of any blood, I had to quickly rethink. Making a huge U turn in life, I chose to study Theology at Westminster College Oxford. I was the only Hindu at my school and often felt quite lost. Fortunately, my Church of England Primary school helped me understand my spiritual connection with God and the peace giving values that all cultures and religions share. Theology helped me further consolidate my beliefs, after which I naturally went on to become a primary school class teacher; a vocation that I have very much enjoyed.

I am so very pleased both as a member of the local community and as a parent, to join the Governing Body at St Stephens School. With a 12 year background in Primary Education and having taught in a variety of schools around the country, I endeavour to support St Stephen's hardworking team and offer my professional skills where needed. I have a wealth of teaching experience and have coordinated a range of Primary subjects including Design and Technology, Science, Religious Education and Healthy Schools,working mostly in Key Stage 2.
Though I do intend to return to education in the near future, at this precious moment, I am enjoying the little time I have left with my son before he begins school full time. For me ‘Parenthood,’ has been a whole new roller coaster education! It has further equipped me with understanding, new skills and utmost respect for all parents and carers, as each new day and milestone in my child young life brings both exhausting challenges and boundless joy. I look forward to meeting you all in this journey at this wonderful school.


Ismail Timol

Hi, my name is Ismail Timol and I became a Parent Governor in 2013 as two of my children had started at St Stephens but I also wanted to make a positive change on behalf the children and parents and the wider community by becoming a governor. My belief is that at St Stephens we have one of the most vibrant, purposeful and exceptional schools for a child to fulfil their potential and my aim would be to ensure children can achieve this.

I have worked in the IT industry since I left University and currently I am working at a local Council within the IT Education sector. I have also been serving on the executive committee at the local Mosque for a number of years and oversee the running of the children’s evening school (Madrasa).

I am also a very keen sportsman who plays football and table tennis regularly every week. I am a passionate supporter of Liverpool Football Club and aim to try and bring the same passion and commitment in my role as Parent Governor!

Jason Ward

My name is Jason Ward and I became a parent governor at St. Stephen’s following my daughter embarking on her education at the school in 2017. I have found the school welcoming, vibrant and positive and as such I felt it would be good to get involved and contribute in any way I can.

My background is primarily in the telecommunications industry where I have worked in many roles from salesperson, to operations manager and then subsequently director within my own company. Since the birth of my daughter I became primarily a stay at home dad and have developed in that period my own online business which I still run to this day. Since September 2017 I have been studying for a degree in business studies at UCLAN, with the goal of becoming a lecturer in this field.

I am passionate about education, and the concept of equality for all in that, and believe that all children should have the opportunity and resources to fulfil their potential. As such I hope to bring whatever experience I can, to aid in the development and success of the school.

Helen Wright

My name is Helen Wright and as headteacher of the school, I act as an “ex-officio” governor which means that I am not elected but am required to serve on the governing body. 

My interest in serving the governing body is clearly one of great importance. As headteacher, I advise governors and provide information so that the governing body as a whole can make important decisions on getting best value from the resources used to run the school in order to provide the best education for our pupils.

I have given 30 years service to education as a teacher and senior leader and in that time have seen may changes to school curriculum and assessment procedures. Whilst schools have been through considerable change, there has never been any alteration in my view that we should all do our best to give children the highest quality education we can provide, using the resources and skills we have within our community. My experience of working in 3 different Local Education Authorities and in 6 schools (in various settings) has given me the opportunity to work with a range of very skilled educationalists and school governors. It is a privilege for me to work with keen and hardworking individuals at St. Stephen’s and within the diverse but united school community here in Broadgate.
