Outdoor learning

Year 6 love learning outdoors in our Environmental Area. This amazing green space to the back of school hosts a pond, trees, a camp fire, seating area and it's own stage! Taking some of our lessons outside allows the children to learn about nature and promotes cross curricular activities outdoors.

Mr Pratt comes in each week to teach the children new skills and how to create things using nature. He taught the children to make a bow and arrow from wood and string to practice archery.

Recently they have been making fires, roasting marshmellows and even creating their own flag. In the past, the children have used charcoal from the fire to makes their own Remembrance Day art work.

This week in outdoor learning the children enjoyed roasted bagels on the fire and drinking hot chocolate. They also made their own bubbles out of fairy liquid!

Previously Year 6 have chopped wood to make candles holders and made people out of wood. At the end of every outdoor learning session we always play a game of hide and seek.

Sometimes we use the environmental area for science and literacy as it's great for treasure hunts and conducting experiments :)

This week Andy helped the children to make motor operated tractors using wood, candle wax, a pin, a pencil, and an elastic band.

Mr Pratt has introduced Year 6 to a new game this week called Capture the Flag, the children have shown great teamwork and brilliant communication skills whilst discussing their tactics. We also had the opportunity to make popcorn on the campfire yum!

The children learnt how to tie reef knots this week. In partners, they used their knowledge to tie slings around their arms enabling them to learn new survival skills.

Year 6 scavenged for nature this week creating some amazing artwork! We also enjoyed honey bagels and hot chocolate by the fire.

We had the opportunity to go to Avenham Park this week, collecting litter to protect our environment! The children really enjoyed planting sunflower seeds ready to fill the flower bed this summer :)

During our outdoor learning session Year 6 worked in partners to create their own dens, developing team building and construction skills.
