Remembrance 2021

Our Worship Leaders did the school proud when they led our Remembrance.  This year, we purposefully chose to make our Remembrance Diverse.  We learned about a local hero who served with his brother in France.  The two brothers died, Richard just one month before the end of the war! Thankfully, their younger brother didn't need to enlist.  Iris Phillipson came to our Remembrance, bringing the post Victorian cards from the front which were sent.

We then learned about the large number of Indian and African soldiers who fought in World War 1 amongst other nationalities.  They are often forgotten. We reflected, this week, on the life of Walter Tull who was appointed as an officer and led dangerous missions.  Walter was a real hero, but due to his ethnicity, was never awarded the millitary cross.  We felt he deserved to be remembered as he was a victim of racism during his footballing career and by not being heralded as a hero when he should have been at the time.  Elsie Inglis was also remembered for her bravery, treating wounded soldiers on the western front.  She was told that she couldn't carry out this work as she was a woman. However, Elsie didn't listen and went to set up a hospital in France. She devoted her life to healing others and didn't allow her gender to get in the way of her purpose to serve.

Vicar Dave and Curate Barbara led us in special Remembrance words before we lay our wreaths and gave a minute's silence.  It was a very moving and reflective worship in school.
