OPAL
Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) at St Stephen’s
At St Stephen’s, we believe that play is not only an essential part of childhood, but a vital component of children’s development, wellbeing and learning. That’s why we’re proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Primary Programme - a nationally recognised initiative that helps schools to transform playtimes for the better.
Why OPAL?
Childhood has changed. Many children today have fewer opportunities to play freely outdoors than previous generations did. Through the OPAL programme, we are making sure that playtimes at St Stephen’s offer rich, high-quality experiences every day - rain or shine.
With OPAL, our aim is simple: to ensure that every child has the opportunity to enjoy amazing play, every day.
What does this mean for your child?
As we implement the OPAL programme, you’ll start to notice some exciting changes to how play looks and feels at our school:
More variety and choice: From creative construction to imaginative role-play, from den building to sand play, children can choose how they want to play, helping to build independence and confidence.
All-weather play: We embrace the outdoors all year round, so children may come home a little muddier - but also happier, healthier, and more fulfilled!
Improved social development: OPAL promotes cooperation, creativity, resilience and problem-solving - all through play.
Happier lunchtimes: Engaged children mean fewer disputes and a calmer, more positive lunchtime experience for everyone.
What we’re working towards:
We’re currently at the start of our OPAL journey. Over the coming months, we’ll be developing our outdoor spaces, gathering resources, and embedding a whole-school approach to play. We’ll also be involving the children, staff and wider community in shaping what great play looks like at St Stephen’s.
Our vision is to create an outdoor environment that is inclusive, inspiring and filled with opportunities for joyful, meaningful play.
How you can help:
We’ll be reaching out to families for support - from donating loose parts and play materials, to helping us with outdoor improvements. If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you!
In the meantime, please make sure your child is ready to enjoy outdoor play in all weathers by sending them to school with suitable clothing. We'll be contacting parents to explain plans for access to wellies and waterproofs, etc.
