Fairtrade Fortnight

Lesson: Understanding the World

Class: Year 6 Year: 2021 - 2022

Year 6  took part in Fairtrade fortnight last week. We looked at what "Fairtrade" meant and decided it helped people in poorer countries get " Fair pay for a fair day's work". We learnt about child labour and poor working conditions. We looked at who was involved in the process of food being in our cupboards from farmers and pickers to supermarket owners and delivery firms. We also looked at food miles and talked about trying to buy produce which is made locally or in the UK to cut petrol use and help the environment.

We took part in a live learning session with the Eden Project in Cornwall and looked at the cocoa plant and followed its journey from plant to chocolate bar.

Ms Wright set us a challenge to make something out of two tubs of Fairtrade hot chocolate powder. We did some research and made our own mini chocolate bars. Our ingredients were Fairtrade hot chocolate powder, local butter and icing sugar. We wrapped our mini chocolate bars and made Fairtrade labels for them: we called them "Fair bites".
